A Day in the Life of a Later Life Adviser:
I tend to start the day with checking emails. I am lucky as I have a team, so they deal with my processing and chasing any applications for me.
I visit most of my Equity Release clients face to face. I do this as it gives me a better understanding of their overall situation – is the house going to be suitable for ER? Are they going to manage living there for the rest of their lives? Is there someone there putting pressure on them? These are just a few examples. Clients are also happier and more comfortable in their own environment.
I thoroughly enjoy meeting my clients, they love to tell me all about their lives, experiences and families. My process is very detailed as you’d imagine when dealing with potentially vulnerable clients. I have to ensure that I feel happy that they fully understand everything regarding the “transactional” part of a Lifetime Mortgage as well as the potential implications it has on their overall finances.
A lot of the clients that I meet are just trying to improve their lives. They may need funds for home improvements or just to top up income. Some need to move home. This is when what I do on a daily basis and enjoy, can be life changing to these clients. I think this is why I can’t see myself ever getting tired of it.
After my initial meeting, I return to the office to carry out my research. It isn’t just a case of finding the right interest rate, I have to ensure that the product I recommend has all the benefits that are needed for each client’s unique situation.
I will then return to see my clients and go through my recommendation with them. My goal is for my clients to be able to fully understand my advice. I give clients time before committing to any of the advice I provide, although some clients are also raring to go. I have to take a considered approach though as I don’t want someone to rush into a decision without taking the time that they need.
As a career it is so rewarding and whilst it isn’t a career that you can imagine wanting to do as a kid, it’s definitely something that I would recommend to the right person.
