Zoom Interviews: Prep for Success!

Since 2020, many companies have moved away from the traditional face-to-face interview and now depend on and value the rise of the digital age to help them in their hiring process. A Zoom interview typically follows a telephone interview and precedes the face-to-face meeting, making it a crucial stage in progressing to the next phase.

In this article, we will discuss how best to prepare for an initial Zoom or online platform interview with a potential employer.

Preparation is key!

There are some more technical aspects to prepare for alongside the actual job role when prepping for an online interview. Interviews can often feel daunting and can lead some people into the dreaded cycle of procrastination!

But, with some focus and by taking things step by step, you really can become a pro at preparing for success!

Zoom Interview Prep

Preparing for a Zoom interview is crucial as it is usually the initial or secondary interaction with a potential employer. It comes after submitting your job application and possibly having a phone conversation. If you are prepping for a telephone interview, please read our article Prep for First Telephone Interview

1. It's all in the details...

Make sure you have the following details in check, ahead of your upcoming interview.

  • Interview Date and time.
  • Make sure to find out if the interview will be video or audio based (sometimes employers also use Zoom to hold audio telephone interviews). If it is in fact a telephone interview – find out more by reading our ‘Prep for 1st Telephone Interview’ here.
  • The name of the person interviewing you. If this hasn’t been given to you, make sure to contact the recruiter and ask the name of person holding the online interview on the day.
  • Decide on which online device you will use. Although a mobile phone can conduct Zoom calls, using a Laptop or desktop with a bigger screen will make the call feel both hands free and more professional throughout the interview.
  • The role you have applied for. This is worth noting down if you have a few different interviews or jobs you are applying for at the same time.
  • It is also worth checking that the company has your correct email address to send the online interview access links.

2. Research:

You have already researched the company when making your initial job application, but you now need to conduct further research.

You should treat this online interview as if it were an in person face-to-face interview and research the following:

  • Read over the Job Description and go through the successful Job Application and CV you submitted that helped create your interview. This will help you plan how to show you have the skills and experience the employer is looking for.
  • If it’s your first-time using Zoom, it’s a good idea to research the platform and make sure you know how to operate it.
  • Think about the types of questions the interviewer may ask. Ask someone you may know working in a similar role any questions that could be worth preparing for.
  • Write some prompt cards that hold useful pieces of information, such as company details, your skills, any dates that hold specific relevance and answers to questions you’ve prepped for. Place these cards in view during the interview.

3. Plan questions to ask:

Interviews are a two-way street, and at the end of an interview, it’s highly likely that you’ll be given the chance to ask any questions you may have.

  • Prepare for this by writing 2-3 questions that will help support your knowledge and understanding of the company or role you are applying to.

4. Where to take the call:

It’s important to make sure you have prepared an area to take the online interview. You should think about finding a space that has the following:

  • An area with good internet! To conduct a Zoom interview you need good internet signal. Make sure you plan and check that both your internet and device is strong enough to handle zoom/video calls.

  • Perhaps it’s worth asking a friend or family member if you could hold the interview in an area of their home with good internet connection or borrow their device to take any stress away from losing contact mid-way through an interview!

  • Prepare a quiet and distraction free space. If you live in a household of multiple occupancy, make sure to let others in the house know the date and time of the interview to avoid any interruptions and maintain a professional atmosphere.

  • If you have any caring duties, please plan ahead by getting assistance to help you out on the day or a few hours before and after the interview.

5. Practice:

Practice makes perfect! Practice by answering some interview questions you may have prepped for. You could also:

  • Practice using the platform so you are well equipped and confident operating the platform on the day.
  • Ask a friend, family member or partner to video call and ask you some of the questions you have prepped for.
  • Contact us directly at BTS, we are always happy to help where we can and provide you with some words of advice. Feel free to call or email at enquiries@bespoketrainingsolutions.com.
  • You could also record yourself practicing your online interview, to make sure you are specking clearly with an enthusiastic and professional tone. Top tip: Smile while talking to keep an engaged & friendly manner.

6. The day of the Interview:

Make sure you have everything you need to hand:

  • A notebook and a (working) pen to make notes!
  • Application Form and CV
  • Your pre-written prompt Cards
  • Make sure your device is fully charged, or, even better plugged into the mains.
  • Put your mobile on silent so you don’t have any distractions.
  • Make sure your environment is quiet and free from distractions. Kindly remind the other individuals in your household about the scheduled time of your interview.
  • Dress the part! As you will be seeing each other on camera, It is worth getting dressed as though you were going to a face-to-face interview. This can really boost your confidence and help you embody the role you’re aiming for.

During the Online Interview:

Make sure you are ready at least 10-15 minutes before the interview is due to take place. This will help settle any nerves and will allow you to go over notes, take some deep breaths.

When the zoom interview has begun, you can:

  • Sit upright and avoid any slouching whilst in the interview. This can help to elevate your confidence and energy levels.
  • Stay polite, professional, clear and engaged in your tone.
  • Be honest if you are having any trouble hearing or seeing the employer. It’s not worth trying to answer anything if you can’t properly hear or see what is being asked.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask the interviewer to repeat any questions you may have not heard properly before answering.

7. After the Online Interview:

Once the interview has been completed. It is a good idea to thank the employer and ask when you can expect to find out the outcome and next steps following your interview. You can then:

  • Consider what you have learnt from your online interview.
  • Make notes on some of the interview questions that were asked.
  • Research anything that you may not have expected to come up in the interview.
  • Think about 3 things that went well for you during the interview and 3 things that you feel you could improve on for next time.
