AF8 Study Plan

Assessment Information

The AF8 Retirement Income Planning unit develops and demonstrates the advanced skills needed for advising on income planning to those in and approaching retirement.

Assessment:

This unit is assessed by coursework only over a 12 month enrolment, with assignments due by 3, 6 and 9 months.

Suggested AF8 Study Plan

The CII recommendation is 150 hours of study time, however this is only an indication of how long you will need. You may take more or less time than this depending on your prior knowledge and experience, and work/study/home commitments.

For many candidates, they may look at the 12 month study period and feel this is more than sufficient time to submit 3 assignments. In our experience, many candidates defer success on at least one assignment which requires a re-submission, and you also need to keep in mind that the time taken for the examiners to mark your assignment (a maximum of 63 calendar days) also forms part of this enrolment period.

It may come as a surprise to see that our study plan recommends that you submit your assignment 1 by week 3. However, our study plan provides you with sufficient time to get three submissions in per assignment. You may find that you do not need to re-submit any of your assignments, and we hope that is the case, however it is always best to be cautious and give yourself too much time, rather than not enough.

This unit is assessed over 3 written coursework assignments:

  • each with either a limit of 2,500 (assignments 1 and 2) or;
  • 3,000 (assignment 3) words.

The pass mark for each assignment is 50%.

There are 100 marks available for each assignment.

The Syllabus for AF8 has just 1 learning outcome, but it is very broad and is broken into several syllabus points and sub sections.

You can find the AF8 Syllabus here!

Map out your time for EACH assignment

Don’t let the 12 month time frame fool you into thinking AF8 is an ‘easy’ option – it’s not! You have to submit each assignment within a maximum timescale – Assignment 1 within 3 months of enrolment, Assignment 2 within 6 months and Assignment 3 within 9 months. AF8 is assessed on submission of 3 written coursework assignments, the first two must be a maximum 2,500 words and the third 3,000 words (with 10% leeway should you go over this word count).

Exemplars may be of practical benefit to students in assisting them to complete their assignments.  Download the AF8 exemplars by clicking here: Assignment Exemplars

First, we recommend candidates work through a study guide. The CII AF8 Study Guide is a compulsory purchase in this unit. As a result, BTS have not designed their own version.  BTS cannot comment on other providers materials, however we would suggest this is where candidates start their study plan.

Ensure you do these steps at the same time - CII exam clock starts tocking as soon as you enrol!

The next step is to work your way through the introductory module of the BTS AF8 e-Learning module and to get familiar with your case study!

  • This covers how this assignment-based exam works and how it should be approached (to the best of BTS’ experience).

Our student-led forums are a space for you to chat to other candidates about all things study and exam related.  However, please note with AF8 you cannot discuss your specific case studies. The CII does not permit any working with others in the researching, construction, writing,
editing or review of coursework or mixed assessment assignment answers at any time, even after they have been submitted and/or marked.
Any conversation must be generic and not directly related to any of your case study assignments.

ASAP
Assignment One

Assignment one must be submitted within 3 months of enrolment

Assess the adequacy of your clients current finances to meet their immediate and longer-term objectives. Analyse any strengths and weaknesses in their current financial position. This assignment is about showing you know your clients. Our e-Learn module will show you how to start constructing your assignments and give you tips on areas to consider.

The CII guidelines  are that Assignments will be marked by an assessor and the CII will notify you of your result by email within 63 calendar of submission.

Assignment One
Remember

BTS have found that many people who sit AF8 do not pass all three assignments on their first attempt. So, you will need to build in some contingency time in case a resubmission is required.

Remember
Assignment Two

Assignment two must be submitted 2 within 6 months of enrolment

Don’t wait for your mark to come through for Assignment 1.  Crack on with Assignment 2 to maximise your time allowance.

Evaluate a range of suitable and affordable options to improve your clients current financial arrangements. You also need to demonstrate why you have identified particular options Many find this a tricky assignment in terms of understanding what the CII are looking for.

In the BTS e-Learn module we break down the key terms of the CII’s brief to help you understand how you should tackle this assignment. We also look at questions you should be asking yourself, and areas you should be thinking about when constructing assignment two.

Assignment Two
Remember

Use the exemplars looking at the examiner’s comments. The comments cover what the candidate did well, and also highlights areas for further improvement. This can help shape what to do or not to do in your own assignments.

Do bear in mind though that these examples are from previous tax years so some of the information in them may have changed since then. They are only designed to be used as guidance not for factual accuracy.

Remember
Assignment Three

Assignment three must be submitted within 9 months of enrolment

Recommend and justify how your clients should use their assets to generate a specific, sustainable, tax-efficient income throughout their retirement. You must get the whole recommendation process right, and demonstrate that you are able to provide a coherent strategy that will meet the client retirement income needs.

This assignment is the one where people often do not achieve a pass first time round. In the BTS e-Learn module we look at how to construct this assignment, what to consider to ensure you are fully analysing recommendations and providing justifications to support these. We also provide pointers as to where others have gone wrong with this assignment in the past to make sure you don’t!

Assignment Three

Week by week study timetable

Click on the plus sign to discover more helpful tips on where to focus your study time.

In this week, you should be working through the BTS Introductory module of the AF8 E-learning module. This will introduce you to referencing and displaying your assignments in a CII friendly manner.

We would also recommend that you spend some time looking through the exemplar answers provided by the CII, and becoming really familiar with your specific case study.

During these next two weeks, we recommend that you work your way through the BTS Assignment 1 Module and use this to support you with drafting and finalising your assignment.

To give you an idea of the time you will need to dedicate, some of our previous candidates completed the assignment within 10 days, undertaking 2 hours of study per day.

These past 3 weeks will have been rather intense, so take week 4 as a week to relax and take a short break before you get back to your assignments!

Back to work! Spend these weeks working your way through the Assignment 2 module of the AF8 BTS E-Learning.

Whilst you are waiting for your Assignment 1 results (which can take up to 63 calendar days to be marked) we highly recommend that you start to draft your assignment 2 during this time.

When we say draft, we mean draft. We do not recommend that you submit assignment 2 until you have received your result from the CII and know whether or not you are on the right track.

Based on the maximum time frame of 63 calendar days, you will receive your results by Week 12 - you may well receive these earlier, however we have proceeded with caution in this study plan, and assumed that the CII have taken the maximum time permitted.

If you have passed assignment 1:

Well done! Now is the time to submit assignment 2.

If you have deferred success on Assignment 1:

Now is the time to review the feedback given to you on your assignment. Depending on your mark,  it may well be worth requesting a re-mark as opposed to re-submitting. This will give you more comprehensive feedback to help you with your re-submission. This re-mark, can take up to 63 calendar days to get back, and therefore it is a decision you need to make quite quickly! It is advisable to hold off submitting assignment 2 until you have received your re-submission or remark back, so that you can ensure you are on the right track with this assignment too.

The past week will have been rather intense once again, so take this week to have a break away from the assignments.

Work your way through the Assignment 3 module of the AF8 BTS E-learning.

If you passed assignment 1 on the first attempt, you will be waiting on your assignment 2 results at this point, if you deferred success you will be waiting on your resubmission/re-mark results from assignment 1.

Whilst waiting on these results, we highly recommend that you start to draft your assignment 3 during this time. Do not submit assignment 3 until you have received your results from the CII and know if you are on the right track.

Based on the maximum time frame of 63 calendar days, you will receive your results for your assignments by Week 22.

Have you passed assignment 1 and 2?

If so, now is the time to submit assignment 3.

If you were waiting on Assignment 1 results and have now passed:

Now is the time to submit assignment 2.

If you have deferred success on assignment one or have received your remark:

You will need to re-submit  Assignment 1 at this point. We would also recommend that you look to submit Assignment 2 and 3 at this point, using the feedback from Assignment 1. You might be tempted to wait to pass Assignment 1 before submitting Assignments 2 and 3, but we want to give you the best chance of being able to use all 3 re-submissions should these be required.

Now is the time to kick back and relax, whilst you wait for assignment results to come back from the CII.

Alternatively, if you are not the relaxing type, you could look to start one of the multi-choice exams such as CF6, which will give you some additional credits towards Chartered!

Based on the maximum time frame of 63 calendar days, you will receive your results for your assignments at this point!

If you have passed assignment 1, assignment 2 and assignment 3:

Congratulations! This marks the end of your journey.

If you need to re-submit assignment 2 and/or 3 stick with us!

By this point, you will have used all 3 submissions for Assignment 1, hopefully you have passed so that you can continue with the unit.

If you have passed either assignment 2 or 3 but deferred success on one of your assignments

You will need to re-submit your final assignment or request a remark.

If you have deferred success on assignments 2 and 3

You will need to re-submit both assignments now, or request a remark to give you more specific feedback.

There isn't a lot you can do during this stage, other than wait for your assignment results to come back from the CII!

Based on the maximum time frame of 63 calendar days, you will receive your results by week 42.

At this point, if applicable you should be re-submitting any outstanding assignments at this point.

Based on the maximum time frame of 63 calendar days, you will receive your results for your outstanding assignments by Week 52.
